School Details

International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA) at Yamanashi Gakuin University is a liberal arts college in Kofu, Japan, with all courses taught in English.

iCLA is a 4-year, English-language College, leading to a bachelor degree in International Liberal Arts. Our faculty members hail from major universities around the world, while our student population is a mix of Japanese and foreign students.

We embrace an educational model based on the concept of liberal arts, with the added benefit of a strong Japan Studies component, which offers our students the opportunity to undergo academic as well as hands-on training in Japanese language, literature, history, arts, pop culture, music, religion and many other disciplines.

After completing the language requirements (where necessary) and the foundation courses, iCLA students can choose between 8 concentrations (Economics, Political Science, Philosophy and Religious Studies, Sociology, Arts, Music, Performing Arts, and Language Arts), which they are encouraged to explore further during their mandatory year of study abroad, in one of our many partner universities around the world.

The iCLA curriculum spans a range of fields and disciplines and encourages students to connect knowledge across disciplines. All course offerings are organized in four clusters: Humanities, Social Sciences, Quantitative Reasoning and Natural Sciences, and Health and Physical Education. In addition, Japan-related courses in a variety of areas are available, while skills and knowledge are connected through the cross-disciplinary Writing Across the Curriculum component and the Graduation Research Project.

Throughout the four years, students are required to take a number of Foundation Courses. Students choose a concentration during their second year, although they are expected to continue to learn how to link, integrate, analyze and produce knowledge. As students move across the curriculum, knowledge triangulates at course boundaries, linking disciplines and generating original ideas, arguments, and solutions.
